Apartments for Seniors In and Near Vernon, Texas

As your parent gets older, life transitions that require a change in residence become more common. Retirement, the death of a spouse, or shifts in your family situation might mean that your aging parent may want or need to make the move to senior living.

Whether they want to cut the costs of home and property maintenance, live closer to children and grandchildren, or live in a community with others their age, senior apartments can offer older adults amenities that can make their later years easier, without sacrificing their privacy and independence.

The Benefits of Moving Into Senior Living Apartments

Making the move to senior living is a big decision and it’s understandable if you’re not sure if it’s the right one. If you’re still undecided, this list of the potential benefits of moving into senior living apartments might help:

Benefits of moving into senior living:

  • No more home maintenance
  • Safety and security
  • Privacy and independence
  • Improved overall quality of life

Some communities also offer services like laundry, housekeeping, meals, local transportation and more.

The Different Types of Senior Living Apartments

If you’re not sure what type of senior housing your parent needs, read on to learn more about the different types.

1. Independent Living and Retirement Communities

Independent living and retirement communities offer seniors a private home or apartment, as well as access to community activities with other senior residents. Some may also offer amenities like lawn care and home maintenance, but not all do. Residents will still have to buy a home and pay their mortgage, property taxes, utilities and other day-to-day expenses.

Typically, these types of communities don’t save residents money, and they may actually increase their living expenses, but they’re a good choice for seniors who don’t need any assistance, but want to live in a community with others their own age.

2. Assisted Living

If your parent needs help with any activities of daily living (ADLs), like bathing, dressing, or grooming, or may need help with them in the future, assisted living is your best bet. Assisted living communities typically offer private apartments, but some may offer private or semi-private rooms.

They also provide meals, housekeeping, home/property maintenance, laundry services, 24/7 medical care, medication management, and assistance with ADLs as needed.

3. Continuing Care Retirement Communities

In a continuing care retirement community, a resident may start out in independent housing and, if their condition deteriorates, move to assisted living later.

This type of care is convenient, but at a price. The average monthly cost of this type of community is about $3,555 a month, typically rising about 2% per year, and they also typically charge an entry fee – which is, on average, a whopping $402,000

It’s more price-effective to move into an assisted living community, because they regularly re-evaluate each resident’s requirements, so they can always start out with minimal assistance, and increase it as needed.

These two communities are ideal for older adults who are still able to care for themselves, but want to live in a senior-focused community.

  • They don’t offer meals. Cooking can be dangerous for seniors who need assistance with daily tasks.
  • They don’t offer laundry and housekeeping.
  • They don’t offer free and convenient local transportation, limiting residents’ ability to safely get to the grocery store, medical appointments, shopping, and more.
  • They don’t cover the cost of basic cable. Residents must set up their own cable service.
  • They don’t offer daily assistance or 24/7 medical care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
